CARE & MAINTENANCE

CARE & MAINTENANCE GUIDE FOR LEATHER JACKETS

1. HOW TO REMOVE WRINKLES FROM LEATHER

Wrinkles happen from folding or improper storage. Here's how to smooth them safely:

STEAM METHOD:
• Hang the jacket in a steamy bathroom (not in the shower) for 15–20 minutes
• Let steam soften the fibers, then gently smooth wrinkles with your hands
• Apply leather conditioner after treatment to restore moisture

HAIR DRYER METHOD:
• Set hairdryer to medium heat, hold 6+ inches away from wrinkles
• Move back and forth while gently stretching/smoothing with your hands
• Let cool, then apply leather conditioner

IRON METHOD (with protection):
• Set iron to low heat ("wool" or "silk"), NO steam
• Place clean cotton cloth over wrinkled area
• Gently press iron on cloth, moving continuously (never leave in one spot)

IMPORTANT: Always apply leather conditioner after heat treatment to restore moisture. Never use direct heat or iron directly on leather.

2. HOW TO REMOVE SMELL FROM A LEATHER JACKET

Odors from smoke, dampness, or storage can be eliminated naturally:

BAKING SODA (BEST METHOD):
• Fill a pouch/sock with baking soda, place inside jacket (not touching leather)
• Store in breathable bag/box for 1–2 days
• Shake off residue

VINEGAR SOLUTION:
• Mix equal white vinegar + distilled water
• Lightly moisten soft cloth, gently wipe jacket surface (don't soak)
• Air dry in ventilated space

RUBBING ALCOHOL:
• Mix equal rubbing alcohol + water
• Dip soft cloth, wring excess
• Wipe affected areas gently, air dry completely

LINING CLEANING:
• Apply mild fabric cleaner or lukewarm water + gentle soap to cloth
• Gently moisten and wipe lining (focus on underarm areas)

NEVER: Sprinkle baking soda directly on leather or soak the jacket.

3. HOW TO FIX LEATHER JACKET PEELING

Peeling occurs from dryness, age, or faux leather degradation:

STEP 1 - Clean & Dry:
• Clean jacket with damp cloth
• Dry in cool dry place completely

STEP 2 - Apply Leather Filler:
• Use leather filler compound on peeling/cracked sections with fingertips
• Fill evenly

STEP 3 - Repair Dye (for faux leather):
• Apply leather repair dye (color-specific) to restore appearance
• Let dry completely

STEP 4 - Condition:
• Apply leather conditioner to restore moisture and prevent future peeling

STEP 5 - Repeat Spray (if needed):
• For faux leather, apply matching spray coat
• Repeat until desired look achieved

PREVENTION: Condition every 6–12 months, avoid humidity, use waterproofing spray. Real leather peeling is harder to fix—consider professional restoration for vintage pieces.

4. HOW TO IDENTIFY REAL LEATHER

Use these tests to distinguish real vs. fake leather:

LABEL CHECK:
• Real: Says "100% real leather," "full/top grain," or "genuine leather"
• Fake: Says "polyurethane," "PU," "vinyl," or "synthetic"

TEXTURE/SURFACE TEST:
• Real: Irregular surface with natural blemishes, imperfections, grain variations
• Fake: Perfectly uniform, smooth, no natural imperfections

SMELL TEST:
• Real: Distinctive organic "leathery" scent (skin-like, natural)
• Fake: Chemical/plastic odor, artificial smell

WATER TEST:
• Real: Slowly absorbs water drop, creates temporary dark spot
• Fake: Water stays on surface, doesn't absorb

BEND/WRINKLE TEST:
• Real: Shows slight wrinkles + color change when bent, flexible, returns to shape
• Fake: Maintains color/stiffness when bent, less flexible, may crack under pressure

EDGE CHECK:
• Real: Rough, fibrous edges with visible layers
• Fake: Clean, perfect edges, gauze-like filaments

TEMPERATURE TEST:
• Real: Warm to touch
• Fake: Cool to touch

PRO TIP: Real leather is soft and flexible; faux leather feels plasticky and thin.

5. HOW TO CLEAN A LETTERMAN JACKET

Letterman jackets have wool + leather (or vinyl) sections requiring different care.

SUPPLIES NEEDED: Soft cloth, mild detergent, cold water, sponge, leather conditioner, lint-free towel

STEP 1 - Read Care Label:
• Check material composition and cleaning instructions first

STEP 2 - Spot Test:
• Apply mild detergent to hidden area
• If color/fabric unchanged, proceed

STEP 3 - Clean Wool Sections:
• Dampen soft cloth with cold water (or 8:1 water:vinegar + dish soap)
• Gently DAB wool areas—NO rubbing (causes pilling)

STEP 4 - Clean Leather Sections:
• Use damp sponge + drop mild detergent
• Dab gently to lift dirt
• Apply leather conditioner afterward to keep soft

STEP 5 - Vinyl/Faux Leather:
• For pen marks, use rubbing alcohol with cotton swab

STEP 6 - Rinse & Dry:
• Rinse with cold water
• Pat dry with lint-free towel
• NO wringing

STEP 7 - Air Dry:
• Hang in well-ventilated area, AWAY from direct sunlight (fades colors)

STEP 8 - Storage:
• Use padded hanger, store in cool dry closet

AVOID: Hot water (shrinks wool), machine washing (ruins materials), harsh detergents.

6. HOW TO SOFTEN LEATHER

Stiff leather becomes comfortable with these proven methods:

LEATHER CONDITIONER (BEST):
• Clean jacket first
• Apply conditioner in circular motions with cloth
• Let hang overnight to absorb
• Buff gently with dry cloth

STEAM METHOD:
• Hang jacket in steamy bathroom during hot shower for 15–20 minutes
• Dry naturally
• Apply conditioner after

WATER MISTING:
• Lightly mist jacket surface with water (DON'T soak)
• Wear after drying to shape with body heat

NATURAL OILS:
• Apply tiny amount coconut/castor/olive oil with cotton cloth
• Massage circularly
• Let sit hours
• Wipe excess

PHYSICAL MANIPULATION:
• Knead tight spots (elbows, collar, shoulders) with hands
• Roll sleeves softly (don't twist)
• Raise arms, bend elbows, stroll to shape with body heat

ALCOHOL + VASELINE:
• Dampen cloth with rubbing alcohol, apply to jacket
• After time, apply Vaseline to moisturize/soften

COMMERCIAL SOFTENER:
• Follow product instructions
• Spray/apply, let sit as directed

CONDITIONING FREQUENCY: Every 6–12 months (6 months if daily wear or dry climate).

NEVER USE: Household vinegar (dries oils), coconut oil alone (can turn rancid).
